Overview

Novasama Technologies has completed our 5th Nova Wallet milestone proposal! We are excited to share this report with all of you, which details how we have completed all of our promised deliverables and more! 🥳

To see the report complete with deliverables table please read this document.

Cloud backups and updated onboarding

Cloud Backups and updated onboarding have significantly improved the wallet management experience for the entire Polkadot ecosystem by removing the often confusing hurdle of passphrase management. Thanks to Cloud Backups and our updated onboarding, users can securely store their passphrases in their personal cloud storage (Google Drive or iCloud), which are encrypted by their customizable Nova Wallet password. This creates a smoother, and familiar web2-like onboarding experience for new users, eliminating the need to immediately deal with complex passphrases.

For existing users, cloud backups simplify migrating your wallets between multiple devices. Instead of having to manually enter passphrases, users can restore their wallets in just a few clicks, ensuring a quick and effortless migration.

It’s important to note that Cloud Backup is an opt-in feature, meaning users have complete control and can choose whether or not to store their passphrases in the cloud.

Push Notifications

Users can now opt-in to receive real-time notifications about their account activities, including Balance changes, Staking rewards, Sent and Received tokens, ensuring that they are always up to date with all of the key activities of their account. Additionally, we’ve made sure that notifications cover important Governance events, such as new referendums being posted and their outcomes, so users can remain actively engaged with the Polkadot ecosystem.

Users have full control over their notification preferences, allowing them to customize what types of alerts they wish to receive. Currently, we are limiting notifications to three wallets per device to manage infrastructure costs as we continue testing with our large active user base.

By introducing Push Notifications, Nova Wallet continues to enhance our user experience, ensuring Polkadot participants are always informed and ready to engage with the ecosystem.

Proxy (delegated to you) wallets

Nova Wallet needs to meet everyone's demands, including users who are more experienced in the Polkadot ecosystem. Proxy accounts are one of the most powerful features in the Polkadot ecosystem and are widely adopted by power users and enterprise entities. Proxy accounts allow users to delegate control of specific wallet features, such as Staking or Governance actions, to another account.

Nova Wallet now automatically adds any Proxied wallet (delegated to the user) to their wallet list, based on the wallets they’ve imported into the app. This provides seamless access to delegated accounts, allowing users to carry out specific operations from accounts with minimal balances, whilst not requiring them to access their cold storage wallet.

By adding Proxy Wallets, Nova Wallet continues to cater to the needs of advanced users and enterprises, unlocking the full potential of the Polkadot ecosystem and setting a new standard for wallet functionality. Check out our Polkadot in Action video about Proxies, or visit Nova Wallet Wiki for more information.

OpenGov Improvements

Nova Wallet was the first application that supported the complete feature set of Polkadot OpenGov from day 1 of its launch. Our OpenGov functionality has proven to be very popular amongst our users and we have improved the experience for our users even further!

The Abstain voting function was added to OpenGov after the initial rollout, and we have added the ability for users to Abstain on each referendum.

We also had a lot of feedback from the Polkadot community about the visual state of the referendum card as well as the details about each referendum's status. We took this feedback onboard and have made the interface not only more visually appealing but also easier for users to understand the current state of a referendum at a glance, including predictions as to what the outcome of a referendum will be based on its current state.

SwipeGov

With the Nova Wallet v8.7.0 update we brought SwipeGov to everyone!

SwipeGov is Nova Wallet’s innovative and AI-powered governance solution that makes it easier than ever before to participate in Polkadot OpenGov!

SwipeGov at its core utilizes AI to provide you with a concise and clear summary of the details of each referendum, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for those looking to get involved in OpenGov, but maybe lack the time to review every minor detail of each referendum.

Swipe right to AYE, left to NAY, or up to abstain – SwipeGov is the most simple and fun way to participate in Polkadot’s decentralized governance!

SwipeGov is available in 13+ languages, allowing everyone in the Polkadot community to review referendums in their own language. This along with an upcoming runtime upgrade that will allow those staking via nomination pools to participate in governance should significantly increase voter turnout in Polkadot OpenGov!

OpenGov updates were released under version 8.4.0 on August 6th:

Network management and optimization

The Network Management update allows users to switch RPC nodes between auto, selected, or custom options for each network, offering greater control over connections and solutions for those facing local internet restrictions. Users can also disable unused networks or add new ones by providing an RPC URL, making Nova highly adaptable to current and future needs.

We've also optimized Nova to address performance issues on older devices with limited RAM. Instead of loading the full runtime of each network on the Assets screen, Nova Wallet now only uses balances, storages, and subscriptions, significantly reducing memory usage and ensuring a smoother experience on less powerful devices.

These improvements streamline network management and lay the groundwork for future integrations, including the addition of light clients, further extending Nova Wallet's capabilities as the go-to solution for a diverse, multi-chain Polkadot experience.

Applinks Integration

Nova Wallet now supports Applinks which allow anyone to create a hyperlink that when clicked, or scanned in the form of a QR code, will carry out a specific action in Nova Wallet! If the user does not have Nova Wallet installed, then the app link will direct them to the Google Play / Apple App Stores to download Nova Wallet!

Nova Wallet currently supports Applinks for these actions:

  • Open a specific DApp in the DApp browser
  • Open the details of a specific referendum
  • Open the multitasking dashboard
  • Add a wallet

You can find out more about how to use Applinks over at the Nova Wallet Wiki!

Additional Delivered Features

As the Polkadot ecosystem continues to grow, we have to continue to meet the demands of the community and quickly implement features that are heavily requested.

As the Polkadot ecosystem continues to grow, we have to update Nova Wallet to meet the requirements of new runtime upgrades, as well as implement heavily requested features. Some of these additionally delivered features include:

  1. Native Swaps
  2. Support for multiple liquidity sources for swaps
  3. Support for new delivery fees for XCMs
  4. Generic Ledger App + v15 Metadata support
  5. Support for new ecosystem cross-chain transfers
  6. Lots of Runtime updates for XCM and staking changes

The necessity to support these features emerges as the Polkadot ecosystem continues to evolve, and we will soon publish a Retroactive Treasury Proposal that will describe these tasks in detail, so stay tuned!

Deliverables Overview

Please refer to the this document to see the Deliverables Overview table.

Funding from Polkadot & Kusama Treasuries

Nova Wallet development has always been funded by the Ecosystem Network Treasuries, with most funding coming from Kusama ([1], [2]) & Polkadot ([3], [4], [5]).

We have always delivered upon the features presented in each milestone, and done so within the stated timeframe within the proposal. Our goal is to provide the best possible user experience and by getting funding from the Polkadot & Kusama treasuries we make sure that our incentives align with the community.
