Polkadot Hub Builders Lab Kenya
From Developer Onboarding to Verifiable On-Chain Applications
Applicant: Cryptogalaxy
Funding request: $9,000 USD
Duration: 12 weeks
Proposed locations: Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, and Eldoret, Kenya
The programme addresses a common gap in developer education: participants may learn about an ecosystem without receiving enough structured support to progress from introductory concepts to tested code, deployed contracts, and documented applications.
Cryptogalaxy will deliver five city-based developer activations, followed by guided building, technical feedback, and a final project showcase. Participants will progress from practical Solidity exercises to team-based projects, with an emphasis on testing, documentation, and publishing their work.
The core programme will focus on a validated Solidity development workflow supported by Polkadot Hub. Advanced exploration of PolkaVM and Polkadot-native capabilities will be included where the available tools and development environments are suitable for reliable instruction.
The programme targets 500 participant attendances, at least 100 practical exercise completions, 20 development teams, and eight documented prototype concepts or demonstrations. All targets will be assessed against recorded evidence rather than attendance alone.
With a funding request of $9,000, Cryptogalaxy aims to establish a practical and repeatable pathway for Kenyan developers to learn, build, document, and continue contributing to the Polkadot ecosystem.
Without these elements, interest generated through community activities can fail to translate into sustained development.
Polkadot Hub Builders Lab Kenya will address this challenge through three connected interventions:
Practical technical training: Participants will work through guided smart-contract exercises covering development, testing, and deployment using a validated toolchain.
Structured progression into building: Participants who complete the foundational exercises will be encouraged to form teams and apply their skills to appropriately scoped projects.
Verifiable technical outcomes: Repositories, demonstrations, exercise submissions, and documentation will provide evidence of progress and help distinguish genuine technical outputs from participation statistics.
The programme will make developer education the starting point, with practical implementation and continued engagement as the intended outcomes.
Stage 1: Developer onboarding
Participants will be introduced to Polkadot Hub, Solidity smart contracts, development environments, and the basic principles of testing and deploying contracts.
Stage 2: Guided implementation
Participants will complete practical exercises covering:
Writing and understanding Solidity contracts.
Compiling and testing smart-contract code.
Identifying common errors and applying basic security practices.
Deploying and interacting with contracts in a supported development or test environment.
Documenting code and preparing repositories for review.
The exercises will be validated before delivery to ensure that the chosen tools and instructions work as intended.
Stage 3: Team-based building
Participants will form teams and select small, clearly scoped project ideas. Teams will be expected to define the problem they are addressing, document their proposed solution, and demonstrate implementation progress.
Projects may explore payment workflows, community tools, transparent record-keeping, or other suitable applications.
Projects involving Polkadot-native capabilities, including cross-chain messaging or Assets Hub integrations, will be considered where the required interfaces, technical support, and development environments are appropriate.
PolkaVM will be treated as an advanced learning area rather than a prerequisite for core delivery. The technical lead will determine its suitability during the preparation phase.
Stage 4: Technical review and showcase
Teams will present their work and explain their implementation decisions. Evaluation will prioritise evidence of working functionality, testing, documentation, and technical progress.
A project concept alone will not be reported as a completed application. Where a team has not completed a working prototype, its output will be reported accurately as a concept or work in progress.
Stage 5: Continued builder engagement
Following the workshops, Cryptogalaxy will run a 30-day follow-up cycle to encourage teams to improve their projects, address feedback, and maintain their repositories.
The programme will also publish a reusable Polkadot Hub Starter Kit containing learning materials, practical exercises, starter code, and instructions developed during the project.

Budget item Amount
Technical instruction, mentoring, and code review $3,200
Workshop venues, connectivity, and delivery logistics $1,500
Starter Kit, learning materials, and technical resources $900
Prototype support and builder showcase $1,800
Participant refreshments $600
Coordination, monitoring, and final reporting $700
Contingency $300
Total $9,000
The budget prioritises technical delivery, practical building, and verifiable outcomes.
Technical instruction and mentoring will support curriculum preparation, workshop delivery, and review of participant work. Workshop costs will cover essential local delivery requirements. Learning-resource funding will support the creation and publication of reusable materials, while prototype support will help selected teams address defined implementation needs.
Prototype support will be allocated against clear criteria and documented outputs rather than distributed automatically. The final expenditure report will record how funds were used against the approved budget.
The allocations are estimates and will be validated against actual delivery requirements before commitments are made. The five-city plan will proceed within the approved funding limit.
The Polkadot Hub Starter Kit will provide future learners with a starting point for practical development. Public repositories and project documentation will allow others to examine the work completed, learn from it, and continue improving suitable projects.
The follow-up cycle will encourage participating teams to remain active and continue developing their ideas. Teams that demonstrate meaningful progress will be encouraged to pursue relevant ecosystem learning and building opportunities.
The programme will not assume that every attendee becomes a long-term developer. Instead, it will measure progress through practical completion, documented work, project demonstrations, and continued engagement.
For Polkadot, the intended contribution is a more structured pathway from developer onboarding to practical application development and future ecosystem participation in Kenya.
The final report will document:
Activities delivered against the planned schedule.
Participation and practical learning outcomes.
Teams formed and project outputs achieved.
Links to published resources and appropriate repositories.
Challenges encountered and lessons for future delivery.
Expenditure against the approved budget.
Results will be reported accurately, including any targets that were not achieved. This will provide the funder with a clear account of how the programme was delivered and what its funding enabled.
Through five city activations, structured smart-contract exercises, team-based projects, and continued engagement, Cryptogalaxy aims to support Kenyan developers in moving from ecosystem interest to demonstrable building skills.
The requested $9,000 will fund a defined 12-week programme with measurable milestones, reusable learning resources, documented project outputs, and transparent reporting.
The programme's success will be judged by what participants learn and build, the quality of the evidence produced, and the extent to which the activities create a foundation for continued participation in the Polkadot ecosystem
